Hi Kub owners,
I am NOT trying to start a flame war so please don't take it
as such. I was deciding between the Kub BX23 and the Cub
Cadet 6284D I wanted the FEL,Hoe and Mower for both. At any
rate I went with the Cub 6284 powered by the CAT (Perkins)
1.13L Diesel but I also liked the Kub BX23 a lot.
One thing that got me was the weight of the Cub was very
substantially higher and the lifting capacity of the FEL on
the Cub was also higher than the Kub. I was told by the Cub
dealer (who also works on Kub's) that the whole transmission,
Hydrostat case is aluminum and that accounts for most of
the weight difference. I was just curious if that was indeed
the truth. The Cub dealer said I would have to step up to
the larger Kub to get all iron and the larger Kub's had a
real iron bell housing connected to the rear end rather
than a frame setup like the BX23 and the 6284D.
At any rate the BX is a sharp machine and I am sure all you
BX owners are more than thrilled with it's performance per
dollar! Quite a nice CUT!
Sincerely,
Brett

I believe you are correct. The BX rear housing is aluminum. ....

There is a lot of aluminum in most small CUT's, with Kioti being the exception to the rule.
The idea is you don't necessarily want that extra 400-500 on your lawn while mowing or pounding on your septic and leach field.
The BX and the Cub you are looking at are not in the same class. A better apples to apples comparison would be the Cub Cadet 6284 to the Kubota B2910 or the B7800. ....

If you're OK with a somewhat smaller tractor and a lower ground clearance, then you'd go for a 6284 over B7800. Price-wise though, Cub cadet compensates for these IMHO shortcomings, so it's really all about your applications. ....

There are design differences between the tractors you have mentioned no doubt as I sell both. The Kubota's are using the newer rigid chassis frame vs the older cast castings for structual strength. I prefer the newer frame models for hydraulic diagnosis and repair as well as the parts to repair. The frame tractors currently used in the larger farm tractors have proven to be easier to fix and the parts are not as propritary. Weight is not needed for most jobs and I'd like the flexibility of removal or addition. ....

DR,
Thanks for the reply! I didn't realize the Cub was more
comprable to the B Series (I also looked at those) I figured
the BX and 6284 were fairly close. The BX and B series are
both very nice pieces of machinery! I also looked (drooled)
over the L30 with full glass cab, now that is one sweet piece
of equipment, not that I needed it.. I just liked looking at
it and wishing I had that glass cab! :)
I don't have any issues with the weight on my lawn so that
is the route I went. I have a "loaner" 7000 Series in the
garage right now (it's the same as the new 6000 series but
it's a 25HP Kaw Gas instead of diesel) love it. Can't wait
for them to deliver the 6284 so I can put her to work.

Art,
Do you have any diagram style images of the Kub frame to
transmission attatchment? I looked at the BX and it looked
very similar the way the two were made. On the 6284 they have
a boxed truck style frame that secures to the cast iron transmission
with 10 bolts (5 per side) from what I see in the diagram.
I would rather have had a setup like my old Yanmar with an
all cast iron bell housing, transmission, rear end setup but
I didn't want to get into the 7000 or 8000 series of Cub's
or the larger Deere's and Kub's it was pricey enough as is
getting the 6284D the Hoe, FEL and the 60" pull behind mower.
They are all great machines and choosing one isn't easy! I
guess picking one on how the dealer treats you is pretty
much the deciding factor on a lot of these purchases.

There isn't to much difference in the bolt patterns of the unit other then the case material being used. For many applications they might both give equal strength. ....

Art,
I certainly can't argue with that, and Kub has been around
more than long enough to know exactly what they are doing
engineering wise!
Thanks for all the replies I am going to wander back to the
Cub section I appreciate all your feedback you all picked a
great machine!
